Some years ago, we had a summer cottage on a secluded
lake. Of course, there were chipmunks around. What's a summer cottage
without chipmunks? I had decided I wanted to do a painting of our little
resident, so I took several photos of him, but I wanted to paint the logs from
life. They were piled underneath the cabin very neatly to keep them dry. I
set up my easel and for several days painted quite happily.
One morning, I washed my hair and went outside to begin painting, so that my
hair could dry in the sun. Unbeknownst to me, there was a bumblebee nest
under the cabin with the logs. I no sooner sat down than I started to
see rather more bumblebees than normal, and soon they began to land on me. I
guess they thought my shampoo smelled like flowers. At any rate, discretion
being the better part of valour, I managed to escape with only a couple of
stings. This is how I discovered that bumblebees have hives just like
honeybees.
Who knew?
