Beverley J. Hanna - About the Artist - top frame

Bev Hanna, Canadian animal artist Yes, it is a real fawn!  For the past couple of years, I have been working on a mural at the O.S.P.C.A. Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in my home town of Midland, Ontario.

This little girl was one of several brought in to the Centre, seemingly abandoned. Only ten days old, she was the most friendly of the five fawns there at the time.

Her ears were badly frostbitten, but this didn't seem to bother her. She was only interested in licking anyone who came near. As I'm rather ticklish, it made for an amusing photo.

I love this picture.  I
t typifies for me just how I feel about animals, art and life in general.  Life is a gift, which I celebrate every day to the best of my ability.

Artistic since early childhood, Bev delivered her first commissioned drawing at the tender age of five (for the princely sum of five cents), and from that point on has never looked back.

At school, teachers reprimanded her for drawing in class instead of focusing on “real work.” But to her, art was real work, and to prove her point she went on to study design and creative arts at college.

Bev strives to communicate the subtle yet important details hidden in everyday experiences, painting primarily in watercolour and acrylic on watercolour paper although she is comfortable with many other art media, most recently computer-generated imaging (cgi).

A realist painter, she frequently incorporates the trompe l’oeil technique, with images spilling over the boundaries and into the margins.

"It is the artist’s job to do more than simply reproduce what she sees, as a camera does. The artist has something to say that is important to her and the art is successful if that message is communicated to the viewer."

She lives and works full time at her studio in Midland, Ontario, Canada, producing original and commissioned paintings, digital photographs and computer-generated images for private and commercial art collections. Bev is currently writing a self-help book to assist beginning artists in learning to exhibit, as well as a children's book based on stories about her dogs.

“The one constant in my life is my desire to learn and develop. The rest is subject to frequent change without prior notice.”
