This is one of Georgian Bay's notorious autumn squalls. They
don't last long - from ten minutes to half an hour, but in
that time, they can sink ships, tear down trees and change
lives forever. A storm like this was responsible for
the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
The day I went out on
the water in this storm, the waves were fourteen feet from
top to trough, and we were in a twelve-foot boat. It
was terrifying and exhilarating at the same time.
