Several years ago, the artists' legal assistance
organization, Canadian Artists' Representation Ontario held
a fundraiser called the "Make Your Own Money" event. Each
donated piece had to be the size and shape of a fifty-dollar
bill, and include the words "Canada" or "Canadian",
and "Fifty" or "Fifty Dollars".
I set to work and collected all the ingredients for the painting I envisioned.
I took the photo references and had the prints made. I sorted them and
played with them, and them painted until I had the image I wanted. I went
to my framer and picked out a beautiful frame, not unlike the one used in this
webpage. When it was all done, I drove to the C.A.R.O. office in Toronto
to deliver my painting, of which I was very proud.
Imagine my chagrin when it was pointed out to me that the donated art was expected
to sell for fifty dollars as well! The framing cost five times that! The
upshot was that I purchased my own painting back (for fifty dollars!) and ended
up selling it for a good deal more, but not before having it scanned for limited
edtion prints.
